On May 9, 2017, I attended E. Joteva’s solo exhibition, Mnemoawariat Broad Art Center. The purpose of the show is to express past, present and future memory using three ice cryo sculptures melting and recorded brain wave pattern. This is the most beautiful art exhibition I have attended at Broad Art Center. First things that I saw when I enter the Mnemonic Place Fields were the 3D picture of ice sculptures projected on the three walls. They were lively, colorful and looked real sculptures as the details were vividly reconstructed from hundreds of pictures from 360 degree point of view as the past. After that, I went to the upstairs where I see a blue wave pattern called ‘Dream Augur’ which is the dream-wave portrait which represents the memory for the future. Then, I reached to the present named as ‘Not all cycles can be contained’ where I found 3 ephemeral sculpture triptychs which are melting. They looked like a delicious ice lollipops to me and the sound of water dro

On May 25, 2017, I have a chance to attend the solo exhibition of Jonathan Moore, ‘It is just me. Or have we not moved?’. The purpose of this show is to convey the prevalence of power, control, and authoritarianism in everyday life and its broader implication through the lens of airport security. As I arrived to the entrance of Broad Art Center, a security officer holding an explosive detection equipment stopped me and searched me with a stunning face. Then, I was instructed to go through the metal detector gate. After that I waited in line to enter the X-ray machine to search my body. Every time I passed through one state, I received a stamp to pass. There was no explanation from any of the security guards and when I asked them, they handed me a blank paper that they claimed to be the explanation but nothing is written on it. All the security officers in the show looked mean and none of them were friendly or helpful to the people. One of the secret I found out was that if I wen

Week 9 : Space + Art

Week 9 : Space + Art In 1957, Russia successfully launched Sputnik, the first satellite, into the space in the history. One can say that the space mission was part of the cold war between the United States and Russia because there was significant competition between the two countries. However, the idea of space travel does not originally come from the cold war but from the artists’ creative works from the long time ago. “The Man in the Moone” by Domingo Gonsales The exploration of space is always a fascinating topic and there are numerous science fictions about it. One of the early space science fictions is “The Man in the Moone” by Domingo Gonsales which was published in 1638 which is over 300 years earlier than the Sputnik. The fiction presents the idea of flying higher into the sky using birds and then landing to the moon. Another example of early artist’s works is ‘Le Voyage dans la Lune’ which is ‘A Trip to the Moon’ in English filmed by a French artist Georges Melies.

Week 8 : NanoTech + Art

Week 8 : NanoTech + Art What is nanotechnology? The word nano is Greek for “dwarf” and it is one billionth of a meter. The concept of nanotechnology is first introduced in “There is Plenty of Room at the bottom” by the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman in 1959. However, it is until 1981 when the scanning tunneling microscope is invented for people to be able to analyze the atomic level and marked the paradigm shift. As Professor Victoria Vesna explained, "This new science is about a shift in our perception of reality from a purely visual culture to one based on sensing and connectivity”, the scanning tunneling microscope utilizes the sensation of atoms and then creates a visual image of the surface. Video: Nanotechnology for targeted cancer therapy With the benefit of this emerging technology, many new products such as water and dust resistant coatings on commercial products are introduced on the market. Some people are afraid that the new technolog

Event : 2

On April 11, 2017, I have a chance to attend graduate student, Youjin Cheng’s solo show called Dead Wood at UCLA Broad Art Center. The purpose of the show is to offer sympathy to robots as the same as humans and animals because the hitchhiking robot who has successfully traveled around Canada, Germany and Netherlands was destroyed in the United States. Youjin Cheng questions why people would destroy a robot. Do people feel threatening from artificial intelligence and robots? Or Are they jealous of robots' abilities that ordinary people cannot perform? If robots have artificial intelligence, will they be able to feel pain in the future? Kinetic sculpture with moving robotic arms The first thing I saw in the show is the kinetic sculpture with moving robotic arms where the plastic prototype of human organs attached. This serves very well for tearing apart the robot would feel the same as tearing apart organs in human. Then, there is a joystick hanging in front of the screen to
